Gran Centenario Azul Gran Reserva
From TequilaClub
[edit] Ron Sez...
This is, without ANY doubt, the absolute best Gran Centenario that could ever be. All Gran Centenario tequilas have a characteristic "smoky" flavor I first ran into (and hated) in a bottle of Mezcal, but in the Gran Centenario this smoky flavor is more subtle, not overwhelming as it is in the Mezcal. Starting with the plata up to the anejo this smoky flavor gets more subtle, tho for me it's still a little too strong in the anejo (which is why I gave my bottle to Steve). With the Leyenda it's almost perfect, tho the Leyenda lacks a bit of body to the flavor which makes you think it could be better. But with the Gran Reserva it is absolute perfection. This tequila is as close to perfect as any tequila I've ever tried (which puts it in the company of Herradura Selection Suprema and Don Julio Real). There is absolutely no reason not to drink this tequila at any and all opportunity, except that it's not sold at any store in the US and it costs $300+/bottle. But it's hard to resist...
[edit] Josh's Thoughts
Gran Centenario makes a fine line of tequila with this one placed firmly at the top. It's perfectly smooth with the distinct Centenario smokey flavor. The finish hints slightly at a sweet piece of heaven. Right when I think a tequila couldn't possibly get any better one more comes along. The Gran Reserva absolutely holds its own amongst the finest of tequilas including the Rey Sol and Herradura Selecion Suprema. This easily puts it in the top three best tequilas I've had. This one is hard to come by however so I may not want to share it as readily as the HSS. :) If you are offered a taste do not turn it down. Of course the bottle is an eye catching addition to any collection.
